ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The Old West is peopled with legends, but our West is full of vibrant and arresting people who are working and living under the glorious Western sky. New Mexican faces reflect both the intimate beauty and rough grandeur of this enchanted land. In this semi-private workshop, you will be photographing people who make their living ranching, training horses, raising cattle. These individuals aren't models "pretending" to be ranchers, ramblers and renegades — they're the real deal. Because we have established personal relationships, you will be able to have unique experiences —from capturing roping practice at a local arena to photographing spectacular sunsets at a historic hacienda.

We will focus on environmental portraiture and understanding how to make great images utilizing the quality and direction of natural light. You will also gain experience in using reflectors and translucent panels to enhance your portraits. Images you might see in your viewfinder include cowboys and cowgirls, historic adobe haciendas, mountain men and ranchers, desert sunsets, roping and western movie sets.

This is a traditional photography workshop, based in Santa Fe, with award-winning photographer Craig Varjabedian providing hands-on, one-on-one guidance in the field. You will also participate in class sessions, in which Craig and your fellow students will share feedback on your digital images and discuss many aspects of the medium.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is terrific for all digital photographers who have a good understanding of their camera and are able to edit images on a laptop computer.

WHAT TO BRING

Lots of enthusiasm for making pictures. Your digital camera with lenses, a tripod and filters. A laptop computer with image-editing software. (We will provide a complete list of necessary gear before the workshop begins.)
