My Camera in New Mexico Poster

For the last six months or so, it has been a real pleasure to share My Camera in New Mexico at the various museum venues around New Mexico. Craig signed and gave away hundreds of "My Camera . . ." posters at the exhibition venues. Craig's openings are frequently great celebrations and wonderful opportunities to meet so many delightful people that enjoy his photographic work. We were astonished at how many people owned all of the photographer's books, including the incredibly rare Places of Power for which only 100 copies were ever printed.

We have about 100 posters left and rather than sell them, we decided that we want everyone to share in the celebration. If anyone would like a signed My Camera poster, we'd be happy to pop one in the mail for the nominal fee of $10.00 to cover a mailing tube and shipping to addresses in the US.

Ghost Ranch and the Faraway Nearby by Craig Varjabedian - book cover

SIGNED COPY: Ghost Ranch and the Faraway Nearby

For more than twenty years, Craig Varjabedian has explored and photographed the red cliffs and sweeping plains of the fabled 21,000-acre Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico. In Ghost Ranch and the Faraway Nearby, he shares more than 100 new black-and-white photographs capturing its evanescent light. These images reach beyond familiar ideas associated with the Ranch—such as its renown as a site of personal renewal and transformation, and as the longtime home of twentieth-century painter Georgia O'Keeffe—into Varjabedian's singular vision of his subject and its ties to ideas of identity, place, and perception.

To further illuminate the experience of Ghost Ranch, Varjabedian gathered essays to accompany his photographs, including an "appreciation" of Ghost Ranch written by Georgia O'Keeffe, an evocative introduction by photographer Jay Packer, and essays by Marin Sardy, Belden C. Lane, Douglas A. Fairfield, and Rob Craig.

Published by the University of New Mexico Press, 2009. 144 pages, Hardcover.

Four & Twenty Photographs: Stories from Behind the Lens - book cover

SIGNED COPY: Four & Twenty Photographs: Stories from Behind the Lens

Craig Varjabedian is one of the West's most eloquent photographers. In his sixth publication, Varjabedian shares his favorite photographs and the stories behind them. Landscapes, architecture, and people are magically revealed through his images as readers gain insight into his creative process. The strength of these four and twenty photographs is not only in their beauty but also in the relationship between photographer and subject—a relationship that goes far beyond the visual.

"This picture transcends a portrait of a cowboy and horse; it presents a moment of trust and affection. I see love, respect, familiarity, trust—all these emotions mutually between a horse and a man. However, the reality presented in a photograph is sometimes different from the reality of the subjects themselves." – from Four and Twenty Photographs

Varjabedian's finely detailed photographs range from the magnificent landscapes of the Southwest, to intimate portraits and luminous places. Whimsical, solemn, enlightening--the narratives expand upon the photographs, so that you view the pictures with another level of meaning, the imagination behind the image. Varjabedian elaborates on his recognition of the decisive moment—the moment a subject reveals its authentic self to the photographer.

By the Grace of Light: Images of Faith from Catholic New Mexico - book cover

SIGNED COPY: By the Grace of Light: Images of Faith from Catholic New Mexico

Perhaps in no other state of the union is the Catholic church and images of faith more ever present in the lives of its citizens -- Catholic and non-Catholic alike -- than in New Mexico. As one casts a quiet eye across the land, the perceptive viewer soon notices a host of venerable objects that contain some facet of New Mexico Catholic iconography. These include humble adobe churches, low riders adorned with Catholic imagery, hand-crafted santos and well known santo makers, diverse representations of the Virgin of Guadalupe, roadside crosses and many other subjects. Varjabedian spent three years completing this body of photographic work. After considering the richness and beauty of these images and learning of the year-long celebrations being planned-by the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, Varjabedian sought and received the unqualified support of Archbishop Sheehan in creating an exhibition of his photographs that would be combined with the Archbishop's words to mark the occasion.

"Craig Varjabedian has made a special study of just such expressions of Southwestern faith, particularly in New Mexico, framing his stunning, black-and-white photographs of churches, crosses and statuary within a landscape long ago deemed sacred by its indigenous inhabitants. . . Within Varjabedian's lens, symbols of faith are solidly rooted in landscape: In Moonrise of Penitente Morada, or La Iglesia de San Francisco de Asis, as examples, the adobe walls of the church rise from the earth much like the mesas on which they're built. Sometimes, the connections are more subtle. A portrait of a young girl, for example, decked out in what could otherwise be a bridal gown, awaits her first communion in a field of wild grass and wildflowers. . . boxer Danny Romero holding a bulto — a small statue of a saint — between the mitts of his boxing gloves .. . La Conquistadora shows a bulto of the virgin sitting on a stool next to a stone monument marking the Trinity Nuclear Test Site in New Mexico, the first place on earth where a nuclear weapon was tested. . . Most images carry a subtle, or not-so-subtle, subtext."

En Divina Luz: The Penitente Moradas of New Mexico - book cover

SIGNED COPY: EN DIVINA LUZ:: The Penitente Moradas of New Mexico

The Penitente Brotherhod, formally known as La Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno, is a lay Catholic organization unique to New Mexico and southern Colorado. This book documents moradas, the building in which the Brothers meet and pray, and offers an intimate and respectful account of their religious observances. The Penitente Brothers have been objects of intense curiosity ever since New Mexico became a tourist attraction, and they have guarded their privacy fiercely. The book respects the privacy of all members of the brotherhood. Quotations are anonymous: building locations are unidentified. But unlike previous melodramatic or scholarly accounts, Michael Wallis's straightforward text and Craig Varjabedian's unadorned photos capture the deep piety of the brothers and their complex relationship with their history and the modern world.

These are ordinary people, many of whom have moved away from the mountain villages in order to earn their livings in city jobs. For these hermanos, keeping their tie to the morada is to keep alive their history, their culture, as well as to express a deep piety. It is impossible to see Craig Varjabedian's luminous photos of their moradas or to hear the voices of the hermanos captured in Michael Wallis's intimate text without being moved by this glimpse into a religious experience absent from the lives of most Americans.

The book includes 72 photographs by Craig Varjabedian with essay by Pulitzer-nominated author Michael Wallis. En Divina Luz: The Penitente Moradas of New Mexico is a winner of the prestigious 1995 Association of American University Presses Award for Excellence.

"a book resounding with awe. Stunning black-and-white photos show the moradas dwarfed against the immensity of bare mountains, open sky and storm clouds. These pictures "speak" in a simple immediate way of the brotherhood's humility before the grandeur of their creator."
